International human rights laws establish that the right of States to decide who their nationals are <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is not absolute.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any individual who is deprived of their right to nationality or denied a nationality becomes \u2018stateless.\u2019 Two specific international treaties prohibit States from rendering people stateless.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/EN\/ProfessionalInterest\/Pages\/StatelessPersons.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1954 Convention relating to the Status of Stateless Persons<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/EN\/ProfessionalInterest\/Pages\/Statelessness.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 1954 Convention defines &#8220;stateless person&#8221; as \u201ca person who is not considered as a national by any State under the operation of its law.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India has not signed either of the conventions.
